Deep in the Apuseni Mountains, we found a trail used only by shepherds moving flocks between summer pastures. It took three attempts to drive it end to end.

A trail that survives by memory

Some roads endure because they are maintained. Others endure because the people who need them keep driving them, season after season.

This one was narrow, rutted, and overgrown in places, but it stitched together ridgelines, summer pastures, and a way of moving through the mountains that modern maps barely acknowledge.
